New Zealand Camping
To most people, camping in New Zealand means one thing: Nature . Lots and lots of beautiful untouched Nature. This stereotype does not go unwarranted; in ten days of Camping around New Zealand rivers my family and I saw a hundreds of things together that one would think Mother nature had been hiding from us in our concert worlds. . One monkey even followed me down a river bank our first day in the bush. Whoops that was my son ha ha New Zealand doesn't have monkeys , However, our food was eaten quickly by our monkey children .
Two of the most important things to remember while camping in New Zealand is that while the Sun can be very harmful to you , and the kea is a very curious native bird in New Zealand and will happily hunt through all your stuff to find something to eat ..if they have the slightest smell of food. What you don't want is for them to smell food on you, since that makes you smell a lot like food. Could be interesting So, the best precaution you can take is to make sure that you keep your eyes on your stuff ,tent, sleeping bag, and any food. It is probably best to cook and eat all of your food at least 20 yards downwind of your tent site. Also, be sure to pack your food separately from your tent and sleeping bag, and don't keep other things that smell interesting like bug spray or toothpaste at your tent site unguarded.
Many people who camp in New Zealand carry with them some sort of protection against the sun, usually in the form of a Sun Cream even umbrella. We don't have bears in New Zealand so you will never be attacked by a grizzly bear. Also we don't have snakes in New Zealand :) so no worry with snakes in your tent .
With a little bit of precaution and a dose of protection, from the mossy's camping in New Zealand can be done easily and safely. Just remember that the Sun and Keas ant the only danger; changing weather conditions are much more likely to catch campers off guard and unprepared. Remember to pack for any conditions and most importantly, be aware of what is happening around you.
